چکیده

Harms associated with anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) use are well-established and a public health concern. Robust estimates of the numbers using AAS needed to inform responses, however, in UK these lacking. Due comparative rarity stigma, general population surveys problematic data availability limits indirect approaches. To address this, Delphi method was used refine key parameters for estimation from attendances at needle syringe programmes (NSP) use. An expert panel (n = 63) surveyed three times 40, 39, 37) generate likely range on NSP attendances. A broad agreement reached on: regional variations use; proportion men who only them orally; inject NSP; women. We conclude that previous survey-based recent appear implausible, indicated by being up 10-times higher. is more common than previously indicated, but further work size characteristics.

Illicit anabolic-androgenic steroid use.

The anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are a family of hormones that includes testosterone and its derivatives. These substances have been used by elite athletes since the 1950s, but they did not become widespread drugs of abuse in the general population until the 1980s. Thus, knowledge of the medical and behavioral effects of illicit AAS use is still evolving. Surveys suggest that many million...

Anabolic androgenic steroid-induced hepatotoxicity.

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) have been abused for decades by both professional and amateur athletes in order to improve physical performance or muscle mass. AAS abuse can cause adverse effects, among which are hepatotoxic effects. These effects include cholestatic icterus and possibly peliosis hepatis and hepatocellular carcinoma or adenoma. In particular, 17α-alkylated AAS appear to be h...

Risk factors for anabolic-androgenic steroid use in men.

The illicit use of anabolic steroids to enhance athletic performance and physical appearance can cause numerous psychiatric and other adverse effects. In order to prevent steroid use and its negative consequences, knowledge of risk factors is needed. We conducted an anonymous survey of 404 male weight lifters from community gymnasiums who completed a 20-min, self-administered questionnaire. The...

Cardiovascular Toxicity of Illicit Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Use.

BACKGROUND Millions of individuals have used illicit anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), but the long-term cardiovascular associations of these drugs remain incompletely understood. METHODS Using a cross-sectional cohort design, we recruited 140 experienced male weightlifters 34 to 54 years of age, comprising 86 men reporting ≥2 years of cumulative lifetime AAS use and 54 nonusing men. Using ...
